The One Wonder of Westchester

The New Croton Dam, completed in 1907 to replace the Old Croton Dam, stands more than 200 feet tall, creating a 34-billion-gallon reservoir that supplies New York City with some of its water. Much of the work was done by stone masons recruited from southern Italy, who then labored on it for 14 years.

According to some sources, the dam is the third largest hand-hewn stone structure in the world, trailing only the Great Pyramid of Giza and China's Great Wall. Whatever, it's an incredibly impressive sight hidden in a small park about 25 miles north of the Bronx.

You can see more photographs, in black-and-white or color, by clicking on one of the pictures below. I prefer black-and-white, but the best option might be checking out both.

  1. Amazing site/sight! I lived in the Bronx and heard of the Croton Reservoir, but never of the dam.
