In 1962, John Glenn set a New York City ticker tape record. Parade-goers showered him with 3,474 tons of paper, just nosing out General Douglas MacArthur's 1951 total of 3,429 tons.
But fame is fleeting. In 1998, a second parade to honor Glenn as the oldest person in space (age 77) racked up the lowest amount ever — 12.9 tons.
