Luck Be a Lady

Years ago, I sent a list of questions to the New York State Lottery. I was hoping to find out a bit more about the women who hosted the Numbers and Win 4 drawings on television. Lo and behold, Maxine Gibbs, a lottery announcer who had been promoted to communications director, sent back these answers:

What are these people called?
Drawing Assistants.

What are the air-blowing Numbers and Win 4 machines called?
Numbers/Win 4 machines.

What do these people do when they're not on TV?
Only one, Kim Chapman, is full-time. She does administrative work. The others are part-time.

Do they use their real names?
Yes.

Can they buy New York State Lottery tickets?
NO!

Are they paid per appearance?
No—hourly.

What sort of training do they go through?
On-the-job, read scripts and practice, practice, practice.

Do they make other appearances?
Yes, Yolanda Vega has been on Oprah!
Kim Chapman attends press conferences of winners.

Do they get mail? What is the oddest letter/request?
Yes. None really out of the ordinary ... for fan mail.

Have there ever been any problems with attempted tampering?
NEVER!
