Splat Art

1987, acrylic on canvas, 29x33"

The origin of this painting was a 2x3" sketch, drawing the blobs with colored markers, then outlining them with a black fine-point felt-tip pen.

I blew up the sketch numerous times at 200% on a copier, breaking it into sections as the size grew. The black outlines became rougher each time.

I taped the full-size copy together, transferred the lines onto my canvas and then painted the shapes in.

The final step was masking off the blobs and airbrushing the background as well as splattering it with darker paint by riffling the bristles of a paint-filled toothbrush. The blob shadows were airbrushed in after applying an additional mask.
